LONG TERM INVESTIGATIONS
An exploration of “All About Me”
As a celebration of every family in our school, we started the year with a collaborative project between school and home. In the classroom the children painted poster board bodies which provided the background for a family collage. At home they continued the project with their parents, adding pictures, drawings, names and anything else that represents them. Once they brought the collages back, the children took turns sharing them with their classmates. The beautiful bodies are now hanging around the classroom where the children can look at them throughout the day and be reminded of the of the continuation between their home and school life.
COOKING
Cooking is an important part of our curriculum. The process of coming together to make home made food offers an integration of many things we value at our preschool. From good nutrition, to exploring different cultures and learning about sustainable food sources, cooking isn’t only a joyful experience, but an educational one as well. Children get a chance to learn different concepts and practice many skills such as measuring, weighing, cutting, mixing and following directions in a hands on way.
ART
At WCK art media isn’t just another fun pass time but a tool to help children make their ideas, thoughts, theories, and perspectives visible and to construct a new understanding of the subject. By giving young children the materials, tools, and skills to represent what they are thinking and observing, the teachers are empowering them to communicate with visual language before they can read and write.
